Perhaps there is no one as set for life in Hollywood as George Lucas. The creator of legendary franchises Star Wars and Indiana Jones, Lucas is also the founder of film production company Lucasfilm, video game development company LucasArts, and animation studio Industrial Light & Magic.

While his many entrepreneurial ventures may be lucrative, none was as successful as his 2012 sale of Lucasfilm to Disney. The company, and the many franchises under it, was valued at $4.1 billion in cash and stock. Today, the American producer, filmmaker, and screenwriter spends most of his time doing charitable work.

Before George Lucas became THE George Lucas, however, he was but a young fan of Flash Gordon, and of Disneyland. Even as a young boy in Modesto, California, Lucas was already very interested in comics and science fiction. Lucas went to art school, pursued a degree in film production, and then met Francis Ford Coppola, with whom he would then co-found the film studio American Zoetrope. Lucasfilm, Ltd., would then be formed soon after, with which he tried to gain the adaptation rights to his childhood favorite, Flash Gordon

Failing to do so, he instead set out to create his own original adventure set in space, today otherwise known as one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Star Wars is one of the biggest things to happen in pop-culture history. Since its original release in 1977, the franchise has set and broken many box-office records. To date, it ranks as the fifth highest-grossing media franchise of all time, with an estimated US$70 billion to its name. It also holds the Guinness World Record for being the “Most Successful Film Merchandising Franchise.”

So long-lasting is the impact of Star Wars that it’s spawned various spin-offs in different media, from comic books to video games, to television series, to theme parks. There are no signs of this stopping any time soon, as the epic saga only recently concluded its storyline with the 2019 installment Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. The most recent spin-off to come out is The Mandalorian, a live-action series focusing on the events five years after Return of the Jedi (1983). As a Disney+ streaming service exclusive, this guarantees that the franchise will not only keep its legacy alive for its original fans, but will also spark curiosity and interest among the younger generations who may not be familiar with the franchise.
