Formed back in 1983 in Burlington, Vermont, Phish is an American alternative rock band known for blending genres, including jazz fusion, progressive rock, funk, bluegrass, and psychedelic rock. They are also known for their musical improvisation and their very dedicated fan base – the phisheads.
The band members are guitarist and vocalist Trey Anastasio, drummer Jon Fishman, keyboard player Page McConnell, and bassist Mike Gordon. These guys have been together since 1986, performing non-stop for 15 years before taking a two-year break in 2002.
Though they briefly disbanded in late 2004, they reunited in 2009 and have played together ever since. As a jam band, Phish’s fan base grew mainly by word of mouth and sharing of concert performances. In fact, Phish is one of the first bands that had fans sharing their performances through file-sharing websites. The band is also known to riff, remix, and change up their live performances, so that no two shows are ever the same, making every concert and performance unique and memorable. For this reason, concert recordings are a traded commodity among fans.
The group’s first live performance was on December 2, 1983 at Harris Mills Cafeteria, University of Vermont where they played covers of classic rock songs. In 1998, the Rolling Stone magazine recognized Phish as the “most important band in the ’90s.” They are said to have influenced famous bands like Maroon 5, Radiohead, and Matisyahu.
The band has released over 16 studio albums and 16 live albums – selling over 8 million albums and DVDs in the US.
