Sir Elton John, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight or simply Reg Dwight, is one of the world’s best-selling musical artists. He is the singer, songwriter, pianist, and composer behind some of the most popular songs of the century, including “Candle in the Wind”, “Your Song”, and “That’s What Friends Are For”.

Apart from his masterfully written and arranged songs, Elton John is most recognizable for his flamboyant outfits and commanding stage presence. Most of his music videos and concerts are an explosion of colors, from costumes and props to instruments and accessories. In his entire music career spanning 50 successful years, he has sold over 300 million albums.

The Name Change

Reg Dwight may seem a decent name, but that’s not what Elton John thinks. In a 1987 interview, he said, “It had too many unhappy memories.” So, changing it to “Elton John” was an easy decision. He even referred to it as “a new lease in life.”

Early in his career, Elton John formed a trio soul ensemble he called Bluesology. The other two members were Elton Dean and Long John Baldry. When John, who was still Reg Dwight at the time, went solo, he took the names “Elton” and “John” from his co-members’ names and used it as his stage name.

Number Ones

Born a musical prodigy, Elton John’s knack for composing songs was nothing short of phenomenal. There are many reports claiming that he can write a song within 15 to 20 minutes. In fact, during his first year as a performer, he released four albums in a single year, a feat that takes other artists many years to accomplish.

Of the over 120 songs Elton John had written, more than 50 made it to the top 40 hits in the U.K. Singles Chart and U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Nine of the fifteen songs he released between 1973 and 1976 were No. 1 on various charts. John later rewrote “Candle in the Wind” to dedicate to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, and it became the best-selling single in the history of singles charts both in the U.S. and the U.K.
