Born as Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner on October 2, 1951 in Newcastle, England, the artist known as Sting is a distinguished singer, songwriter, and actor. His nickname came from the black and yellow sweater that he usually wore during his early days as a musician. Though a gifted solo artist, he is also known during his stint with the band, The Police.

Sting played with several groups before he formed The Police in 1977 with American drummer Stewart Copeland and Corsican guitarist Henri Padovani. Andy Summers later joined the group. After their ten-minute debut concert at Alexander’s in Newport, the group played at various London pubs. Shortly, however, the band had some problems, and Padovani left the group. Since then, The Police has become one of the few longstanding three-piece punk rock bands in music history.

While trying to win over audiences and desperately needing money, the band did a commercial where they bleached their hair blonde. This curious incident led to the band’s trademark look.

By spring of 1978, the newly formed trio released their single, “Roxanne.” Unfortunately, because of its prostitution theme, the public’s initial reaction to the song was not at all pleasant, and the song failed to both make it to the charts and the BBC’s playlist.

Nevertheless, the band began touring and playing in small clubs in the United States. This helped promote their first album, Outlandos d’ Amour, and the eventual re-release of “Roxanne,” which made it on both British and American charts. Two more songs from the album also became popular singles: “So Lonely” and “Can’t Stand Losing You.”

Their second album, Reggatta de Blanc, which featured the hit “Message in a Bottle”, had won the band their very first Grammy award and helped cement their name in punk rock history. A couple of years and a number of hits later, the Police were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
