The Star Trek universe is one of the most notable franchises in pop culture. Starting as a television program created by Gene Roddenberry, the original Star Trek series, often referred to by fans as “The Original Series,” lasted for only three seasons. 1. Eddie Murphy Was Supposed to Have a Role
Star Trek fans know that the franchise includes prominent actors, such as William Shatner and George Takei. It was planning to add Eddie Murphy to its star-studded cast. With his success on Saturday Night Live, Murphy intended to join the franchise, but no script enticed him enough to officially join. Instead, scriptwriters created the motion picture Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home to have a much more serious tone.
2. The Kiss Between Captain Kirk and Lt. Uhura Was Originally Different
Depicting the first interracial kiss on television, Star Trek made history in 1968. It is known to be an exchange between Lieutenant Uhura and Captain Kirk. However, the kiss was originally written to be between Uhura and Spock. When William Shatner discovered he could contribute to making history, he convinced the show creators to swap the kiss so it included him instead.
3. Leonard Nimoy Created the Vulcan Salute
Any Star Trek fan knows the pertinence of the Vulcan salute in popular culture and the franchise’s history. However, you may not know that Nimoy created the sign himself in Star Trek: The Original Series.
Originally, Spock was supposed to hit an enemy in the back of the head. Explaining that this was not very Vulcan, he created the nerve pinch. Following this, he added the salute, which is now characteristic of the show.
4. Zachary Quinto Could Not Do the Vulcan Salute
The portrayal of Spock in the 2009 version of Star Trek was done by Zachary Quinto. However, he often could not perform the iconic hand sign created by the original character. Quinto had to configure his hand off-screen before filming it.
5. There are More than 125 Star Trek Video Games
The original series led to the creation of an animated series, but the franchise has also inspired more than 100 video games. Since the start of the show in the mid-60s, there have been games ranging from standup arcade games to console-based creations on Xbox and PS3.
6. Spock Was Going to Have Red Skin
In Star Trek: The Original Series, Spock was supposed to have red skin. During screen tests, though, the color did not appear correctly when displayed on black and white television. Resultingly, the show’s creator Gene Roddenberry nixed the idea.
