Dave Matthews Band (DMB) is a famous American rock band formed in Charlottesville, Virginia back in 1991. The band is well-known for playing their songs differently in all of their live performances.
Its founding members are vocalist and guitarist Dave Matthews, drummer Carter Beauford, saxophonist LeRoi Moore, bassist Stefan Lessard, keyboard player Peter Griesar and violinist Boyd Tinsley. Of the founding members, only Matthews, Lessard, and Beauford remain. Joining them are current members Rashawn Ross on wind instruments and backing vocals, Jeff Coffin on wind instrument, Tim Reynolds on lead guitar, and Buddy Strong on keyboards and backing vocals.
The band’s very first official gig was on May 11, 1991 at a private party held in downtown Charlottesville, while their very first public performance was at Middle East Children’s Alliance Benefit in March of the same year. DMB’s 1994 debut album, Under the Table and Dreaming, brought them instant global fame. The album eventually became 6-time certified platinum.
As of 2018, the band released nine studio albums, sold a record of $38 million in CDs and DVDs and $20 million in concert tickets. They have also been nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
In 2019, DMB became the first band to be named a Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations Environment Program for their strong environmental advocacy. The band also manages their own charity, the BAMA Works Fund, founded in 1999 to address the needs of the environment, disadvantaged youth, disabled persons, and arts and humanities in the surrounding Charlottesville, Virginia area.
