Compared to other artists, such as Elvis Presley and the Beach Boys, The Beatles are one of the most successful rock and roll bands of all time. Celebrate them with The Beatles memorabilia and discover these 11 facts!
1. From the Crickets to the Beatles
The Beatles did not always go by that name. Inspired by Buddy Holly and the Crickets, the bassist at the time, Stuart Sutcliffe, suggested “Beatals.” This then became the Silver Beetles to the Silver Beatles, and finally, The Beatles, as we know and love.
2. How a Beloved Beatles Song Came About
The prominent George Harrison song “Here Comes the Sun” was written by the musician in the country house of Eric Clapton. The band met with the former member of Cream for a business meeting. Harrison escaped from their negotiations and composed the famed anthem for spring.
3. Fast Recording
The Beatles recorded their debut album Please Please Me within 13 hours in 1963. Additionally, John Lennon had a cold this day, making the recording session even more impressive.
4. There Is Equal Songwriting Credit Between Paul McCartney and John Lennon
McCartney and Lennon wrote many Beatles songs. In the early years of the band, they would write song lyrics together. Later on, they would become more separate in their writing process. They still shared equal credit due to their early partnership–even if there was only one songwriter.
5. Decca Records Turned Down the Band
Beatles producer George Martin, who built his career off his love for classical music, is known for signing The Beatles onto the label EMI Studios. However, The Beatles auditioned for Decca but were rejected.
Some of the songs from this audition would go on The Beatles’ anthology album. Manager Brian Epstein continued to find auditions for the band until they were successfully signed by EMI.
6. Ringo Starr Was the Last Addition to the Band Members
At a recording studio session, their producer stated he was not impressed by then-drummer Pete Best. The other members replaced Best with Ringo Starr, who would complete the legendary lineup.
7. Lennon Changed His Name After Yoko Ono
After marrying Ono, John Lennon changed his name to include his wife’s. While he could not remove his given middle name, Lennon would officially become John Winston Ono Lennon.
8. The Band Has the First British Rock Album with Printed Lyrics
The album cover for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is iconic. What’s more, The Beatles popularized a new tradition of featuring the lyrics to each song printed on the back.
9. John Lennon Performed “Julia” Alone
The song “Julia” from the band’s self-titled album is the only Beatles song to be recorded without the instrumentals or vocals of all four Beatles. Lennon is the only one featured on this track.
Likewise, “Blackbird” is the only song sung by McCartney as a Beatle.
10. Eric Clapton Is Featured in a Song
Without official credit, Eric Clapton played on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” reflecting the looming separation of the band. The Beatles broke up in December 1974.
11. Paul McCartney May Not Actually Be Paul McCartney
George Harrison died in 2001, and Lennon in 1980. Starr and McCartney are the only surviving Beatles members.
However, due to song lyrics and supposed hidden clues, there is a conspiracy theory that McCartney died in 1966. Instead, he was replaced by a look-alike.
