Adapted from the superhero character in Marvel Comics, Iron Man is a 2008 Hollywood film released by Marvel Studios and Paramount. It is the film that marked the launch of Marvel Cinematic Universe. 

 

Jon Favreau directed the film based on the screenplay written by Mark Fergus, Art Marcum, Hawk Ostby, and Matt Holiday. The cast members include: Robert Downey, Jr. (Tony Stark/Ironman), Terrence Howard (Rhodey), Jeff Bridges (Obadiah Stane), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), among others. 

 

The film tells us about the story of Tony Stark, a billionaire inventor, genius engineer, and industrialist who is kidnapped and forced by terrorists to create a weapon for mass destruction. Using his intellect and ingenuity, he found a way to escape by building a technologically advanced armor suit. Finding out about an evil plot that had global repercussions, he puts on his suit of armor and swears to protect the globe as Iron Man. 

 

Set mostly in California, The filming of Iron Man in 2007 began March toJune 2007. During the filming of the movie, the actors were given the freedom to deliver their own dialogues, adding their own personalities to the characters. As for the armor, rubber versions as well as metal ones were made by Stan Winston’s company, and were combined with CGI graphics. 

 

With a $140 million budget, Iron Man had earned more than $585 million, ranking as the 8th highest grossing film of 2008. It has received accolades from film critics due to its superb acting (especially Robert Downey, Jr.), direction, screenplay, action sequences, and visual effects. American Film Institute has included it as one of 2008’s ten best films, and it has also received nominations for the Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Editing categories at the 81st Academy Awards. It gave birth to two sequels: Iron Man 2 (2010) and Iron Man 3 (2013).
